This year’s theme, “Invest in women: Accelerate progress,” resonates as a powerful call to action for a world that recognizes and values the diverse talents and capabilities of women. The world is facing many crises, ranging from geopolitical conflicts to soaring poverty levels and the escalating impacts of climate change. Should present trajectories persist, a staggering 342 million women and girls may find themselves in extreme poverty by 2030. To address this looming crisis and prioritize women’s needs and concerns, governments must actively promote gender-responsive financing and elevate their commitment to public spending on essential services and social protection.

Moreover, policymakers must acknowledge, value, and factor in the indispensable contributions women make to global economies through both paid and unpaid care work. Astonishingly, women invest nearly three times more time in unpaid care work compared to men. Assigning a monetary value to these activities reveals their significant economic impact, accounting for over 40 percent of GDP. Recognizing and addressing these imbalances is paramount for fostering gender equality and sustainable economic development.
